Turkmenistan exported 11.7 billion cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas in the first quarter, up 6.5 percent from a year earlier, the oil and gas industry ministry said.
Holder of the world’s fourth-largest reserves of natural gas, Turkmenistan produced 21.5 bcm of gas in the January-March quarter, up 5 percent, the ministry said without providing further detail.
China has supplanted Russia as the main buyer of Turkmen gas in recent years, annually importing 30-35 bcm of the fuel. Moscow angered Ashgabat this year with plans to cut its imports to 4 bcm from last year’s 11 bcm.
Iran also imports small volumes of Turkmen gas.
