The European Commission welcomes the decisive action taken by EU legislators on coastguard cooperation and maritime border control.
Three EU agencies can now join forces, streamline activities and avoid duplication of efforts, with the result of a better service to national authorities. For the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), for instance, cooperation with the European Maritime Safety Agency can only make maritime surveillance more cohesive, while cooperation with Frontex will multiply the opportunities for sightings and inspections in the Mediterranean.
The EU is now better equipped to deal with all kinds of risks and threats occurring at sea, in relation to border management but also in relation to accidents, search & rescue operations and illegal activities at sea – thus making our response to the many challenges of the maritime domain quicker and more efficient.
