China exported 1.23 million mt of metallurgical and semi-finished coke in May, up 23% year on year, according to data released Monday by the General Administration of Customs.
The May exports were 73% higher than April’s 710,000 mt.
Seaborne coke prices have been pressured this year by continued oversupply in domestic coke industry in China, the largest shipper of the raw material, as well as softer demand from traditional importers like Japan and India.
Platts assessed 64/62% CSR, 12.5% ash Chinese coke at $147/mt FOB Tianjin on June 5, down nearly 20% so far this year.
Brazil, India, Mexico and Malaysia were among the most active spot buyers of Chinese coke shipments with May laycans.
China’s exports for the first five months of 2015 rose 25% year on year to 4.25 million mt, the data showed.
In 2014, China exported its highest volume of coke since 2008, at 8.6 million mt — accounting for over two-thirds of global seaborne supply, Platts data showed.
